BNI Success Formula Summit

BNI members from around the region attended the BNI Success Formula Summit hosted by BNI Directors George Zacherl, Zacherl Insurance Group, David L. Holzer, Holzer Financial LP, and Wayde Nelson, b$olutions, LLC. A panel of members successful in the aspects of the Success Formula 40+6+4+1=51 answered questions from the audience. The BNI Success Formula is a 5 year goal for the region’s members to achieve an average $5100 in income per member per month. Thank you to the members who participated on the panel: Bob Hoza of Keller Williams Reality, John Geisler of Coldwell Banker Real Estate, Inc, H David Holzer of Holzer Financial, LP and Dee Dee Adams of Northwood Reality Services.
HAVE YOU PAID YOUR BNI DUES?I had dinner last night with a friend who told me a story about his snow blower. OK, so the snow blower story wasn't that exciting so I won't go into it. Although, in the middle of the snow blower story, the Penn State vs Pitt wrestling match came on the big screen in the restaurant which caused him to light up and launched him into another story, and another and another.
John is a former wrestler. He loves wrestling. He has coached and continues to travel all over the northeast United States to tournaments and knows everybody in the sport, or so it seems to me. He is a former two-time WPIAL Wrestling Champion, a one-time PIAA Champion and continued on to wrestle for Pitt. But prior all of that, John spent four years wrestling without winning a single match. How does a winless athlete become a champion? Hold that thought.
What organizations do you belong to? Are you a member of Rotary, your local chamber, BNI or another networking group, SMC Business Councils? If so, you have paid a membership fee and now you are a member. One of the benefits of being a member is that other members find out your name, research your business, drive to your location and write you a check....NOT!
Getting something out of an organization without putting something into it is like somebody joining a wrestling team and expecting to become a champion without putting forth the effort. Let me jump back to John for a little bit.
No way did you go winless for four years! I said to John, because I've seen the championship photos and trophies and medals. What happened? John continued to tell me that he, like a lot of wrestlers, athletes, and business people didn't understand his potential, didn't think it was achievable, and, as a result, didn't care enough to put in the proper effort. Then one day, he won his first match and a light went on in his head. He said to himself hey, I can do this! He started lifting weights, working out, and working harder at practice. He started winning. He said I can do this, and I'm pretty good at this. He started expecting to win and worked even harder and before long he said I can do this better than anybody else!. And then he did.
What kind of effort are you putting in to your organization? Do you show up for meetings? Do you attend networking functions? Do you join any committees? Do you attend any training? Do you review the members-only benefits to see how they can benefit you?
Be a Champion of your organization. Become involved, meet some people, get some wins. Pretty soon you may learn that you can do this better than anyone. You may learn that you cannot afford to NOT be member! For example, I cannot afford to not pay my BNI dues.
I've been a member of BNI since 2004 and I remember that in my first year, I held the broad category of Print Communication which encompassed exhibit booths, signs, banners, printing and promotional advertising items. I did not come close to getting my ROI (return on investment) that first year. My second year was a break-even year in BNI. But in my third year, one of the veteran members sat me down and together, we looked at my statistics. He made several suggestion which I was smart enough to follow. I began to have more 1 to 1s. I began to refer more. I became more involved and took a leadership positions, having held the positions of Visitor Host, Educational Coordinator, Secretary/Treasurer and President. I narrowed my category to Advertising Specialties / Promotional Advertising Items and allowed a printer, a designer and a sign and banner company into the group. I also began to attend more regional BNI functions. What were the results? Today, my largest client for four straight years is a BNI referral. When I look at BNI as a client and add all of the referrals together from last year (largest aside), BNI has become one of my top five clients. Paying the membership fee is investment. Paying the dues is ROI.
As for John? After his wrestling days, he was selling for a window and door company when his dad told him that he should become an entrepreneur and start his own window and door business. He told his dad that it was too hard and too much work. His dad looked at him and said John, you've never failed at anything you put your mind to. What makes you think you'll start now? John went to the entrepreneurial mat and began to pay his dues. He has owned his company for over twenty-five years. I met him 16 years ago when he sold me windows and we became friends. For several years he told me Dan, you can do this, and you can do this better than anyone. I finally listened. He taught me to pay my dues.
So you want to become a BNI Champion? Once you pay your membership fee, think about paying your dues.

What a Great Unsolicited Testimonial!
On Dec. 28th 2010 I came home to find my furnace not working. I have had this problem before and usually am able to fix it myself. I worked on it and it worked for about a day. It became apparent that my skills were not enough to fix the problem. I decided that I needed a professional. I needed someone that I could trust and I decided to check for this person on the BNI web site. I found him in the BNI Synergy Group. His name is Rob Turbeville with Aire Serv Heating and Air Conditioning of Allegheny and Washington, 474 Hickman Street Ext. Bridgeville. Pa 15017.
I called his number and explained my problem to his answering machine. Within a half hour he returned my call. He gave me a few suggestions and I did as told. My furnace was working the rest of the evening. However, the next morning it was on and off. I called him again and I requested a service call from him. He sent out Terry to check on the furnace. Being a person that has to check everything out and to have a learning experience while doing so, Terry pointed out what could be wrong with my furnace. He gave me two options. He could tear the furnace apart and try to find the problem, such as a cracked or clogged heat exchanger or install a new furnace. Either way it was my choice. He did not pressure me in any way and I decided to go with the new furnace(my furnace was 15 years old.)
Rob called me and asked if he could come for a visit and explain what furnace replacements were available. He came out showed me the furnaces and I picked the one I thought would work for us. He said that his men would be out Monday at 8 am and come Monday they were ringing my doorbell at 8. The men were in and out by 5 PM and my new furnace was working great.
What I liked about Rob and his company was his response, his options for me to choose from, his care in taking the time to explain everything to me. He did everything on a timely basis and I was grateful knowing with him in BNI I could trust him. Please let this be a testimonial for his company and his kindness.
Sincerely,

BNI BUSINESS NEXUS CHAPTER
Visiting Other Chapters Around the Globe
I've been a BNI member in Western Pennsylvania since 2001 and this year I decided to visit chapters outside of my region.

During February, I was planning to visit my family in Los Angeles so I located a chapter that meets close to my father's house. My local executive director, Deanna Tucci Schmitt, got in touch with Red Mann, her counterpart who heads up the BNI San Fernando Valley region. She in turn contacted the president of the BNI Referrals for Life chapter, Bill Bodell. Red, Bill and the other members of the chapter warmly greeted me. It was a vibrant meeting with a number of new members and visitors; I was particularly impressed with the preparations for their upcoming visitors' day.
This summer, my family decided to go to Britain for our vacation so I asked Deanna to contact Laura Hurren, the executive director for BNI London North Central. The BNI Holborn chapter meeting location was about a 10-minute walk from our hotel in London. The chapter director, Liz Morgan and the other members made me feel most welcome and I was impressed with the amount of "thanks for closed business" that was passed. While the meeting was very businesslike, the members also seemed to have great rapport and enjoy themselves.
During both meetings, I appreciated how the standard BNI agenda was closely followed but at the same time, there were local nuances and each chapter had its own distinct personality. I was able to take away ideas to implement in my chapter.
I highly recommend that you experience a BNI meeting outside of your local area. My goal is to visit a chapter in a non-English speaking country in the not-so-distant future.

BNI Airport Member Shout Out
Living in the corporate culture for 36 years, I had lost my faith in the existence of the American entrepreneurial spirit. In August of 2009, I found it alive and well in BNI.
Entrepreneurs and business professionals who exemplify the ‘Given’s Gain’ philosophy, helping each other grow their businesses, but more importantly building relationships. To know, like and trust someone is a basic human need, quite often lost in the corporate world, BNI has enabled me to renew my faith in people and the trust they can share.
Thank you Deanna for bringing BNI to Western Pennsylvania and a sincere thumbs up to all the team members of BNI.

BNI - BUSINESS NETWORK INT'L. provides a structured, supportive business environment in which local business people can get together to network, learn valuable new marketing skills and develop the strong personal relationships that lead to trust and the consequent generation of significant business for each other.
Being active in a BNI chapter is like having forty sales people working for you because your fellow members will be carrying your business cards and referring your business to people they meet. Successful businesses depend on "word-of-mouth" marketing as the most powerful form of promotion there is.
Members of a Business Network Int'l. chapter pass thousands of referrals each year generating millions of dollars worth of business for members! BNI is a business and professional networking organization that allows only one person per profession to join a chapter — essentially locking out your competition.
All the other members of your BNI chapter carry several copies of your business cards around with them. When they meet someone who could use your products or service, they hand your card out and recommend your services. It's as simple as that! It's simple because it's based on the proven concept of "what goes around, comes around." If I help you, you'll help me, and we will both benefit as a result.
Would you like to increase your business by 20%, 30%, 50% or as much as 100%? You can see results like this - Many have! Some participants have added as many as 50 new clients in the first 2 years!!
